About kate

I first learned about Structural Integration while at a yoga retreat at Esalen. I had been teaching yoga for several years and wanted to find a school where I could learn more about anatomy, alignment and how to see a person’s structure. Another student at the retreat recommended I check out the Rolf Institute and it turned out to offer everything I had been looking for.

Each of my teachers at the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute taught me that a person’s system responds to Structural Integration when the practitioner is looking at the client as a whole being. Not a sum of parts, not a specific ache or pain, but truly an entire being with a complex story to tell. Each client is a collaborative partner and we both move forward together to bring their system into alignment and ease.

My Timeline as a Structural Integration Practitioner:

  • December 2009 - graduation from Basic Training at the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute

  • January 2010 - opened Upright Rolfing in the heart of Capitol Hill in Seattle

  • October 2016 - completion of my training through the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute to become a Certified Advanced Rolfer

  • July 2018 - joined as a member the International Association of Structural Integrators (IASI), moved practice to Columbia City in south Seattle

  • September 2021 - passed national exam to become a Board Certified Structural Integrator (BCSI)

  • March 2022 - metamorphosis! Upright Rolfing becomes Upright Being, continuing to offer Structural Integration in the heart of Columbia City

When I’m not at work, I am turning a dried-out sod desert into a lush, vegetable and ornamental garden; working on projects inside my home; practicing the piano; working out with my favorite Pilates teachers at Atlas Pilates; cooking up big meals in the kitchen; reading from the endless stack of books on my table; educating myself on white body supremacy and the myriad ways it plays out in daily life so that I can actively fight against implicit and systemic racism; spending time with family and friends and bouncing my latest theories off of colleagues. This pandemic has hindered very few of my interests and passions. In fact, it’s given me even more time and energy to focus on what I love. That is a privilege I recognize and hold mindfully.
